Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum wallisii) are a lot of fun to grow. They're beautiful and they're super easy to care for. But some people are unsure about how to care for them, so we've put together this guide to help you understand what it takes to keep your peace lily happy and healthy.

The best environment for peace lilies

The first thing you need to know is that peace lilies is that they are one of

the most low-maintenance plants you can get. They thrive in indirect sunlight, so put them near windows or on a south-facing porch where they'll get lots of bright light but not too much direct sun. Peace lilies are native to central America, so they’re used to any area with lots of warmth and humidity. This makes bathrooms the ideal place for peace lilies. When choosing a spot for your plant, avoid putting your peace lily somewhere with cold draughts, heat, or wind, for example, fireplaces, doorways, or vents. Peace lilies will appreciate a temperature of 16°C and above, or ideally even warmer than 21°C.

Watering peace lilies

Water them once every seven days or so; don't let their soil get dry between waterings. If your plant gets too dry, it will start wilting or dropping leaves—but if you see it doing this, just give it more water! Too much water isn’t good either, but you’ll be able to tell by patting the top of the soil to tell if you need to water your peace lily. Peace lilies thrive in constantly moist soil. Ensure that your chosen pot allows for drainage.

General care for peace lilies

Peace lily leaves can collect dust every so often so you should wipe them down with a damp cloth to ensure they can effectively photosynthesise and remain healthy.

Fertilisation

All plants need food at some point to effectively grow and flower. You can use fertiliser every month or two to keep your plant thriving and at its best. In spring and summertime, you should nourish your peace lily with some liquid plant food, following the plant food instructions.

Repotting

Your peace lily will probably need repotting every few years. Usually, their roots like to be a bit restricted, but if you notice that your plant is constantly wilting despite watering it, it may be outgrowing its current pot. The ideal size of a pot for a peace lily is a third larger than the size of the root. The best soil to use is multi-purpose or compost.

How to get a peace lily to bloom

Peace lilies will usually flower in spring or early summer. Once they’ve bloomed, their flowers will last around a month. To ensure peace lilies flower, they need adequate indirect light. As it reaches springtime, you should move your plant to somewhere with a good amount of bright indirect sunlight.

If you notice your flowers are green or weak, or there is a lack of flowers, this could be a result of improper fertilisation. Green flowers are a sign you should reduce fertilisation. Weak or a lack of flowers means that you may need to try a new fertiliser for flowering plants.
